Coleus


There are several varieties of Coleus at Purdue Horticulture Gardens. This Coleus is Solenostemon scutellaroides. The variety pictured is 'Dipt in Wine'.

On display at Purdue Horticulture Gardens, these are familiar vegetables developed for the eye. This is July, as Brassicas are typically cool-season plants it should keep growing into fall, with added color as the days go by.

Blood Flower

This is Blood Flower (Asclepias curassavica 'Silky Deep Red'). Asclepias means it is one of the milkweeds, and the flower has the familiar unique structure of the milkweeds. Pictures taken July 27, 2009.

Monarch butterflies use the Blood Flower at the gardens as well as the nearby Butterfly Weed.

Portulaca oleracea as ornamental


Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) 'Toucan Fuchsia'. This is the same species as the purslane in everyone's garden in the summer. The weed purslane has tiny yellow flowers, this Toucan Fuchsia purslane cultivar has much larger violet-red flowers

The first two pictures are at Purdue Horticulture Gardens, July 27 and July 21, 2009. The third picture is of the same kind of ornamental purslane. It's close by, in a planter between Stewart Center and the Union building, July 20. 2009. The other plant with the purple foliage is ornamental pepper.

Alocasia & Begonia

A recurrent subject of Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings was Datura, these paintings are commonly described as jimson weed which would be Datura stramonium but to me the leaves have more the look of Datura metel.
